Would Bernie Sanders Have Beaten Trump?

Would Bernie Sanders Have Beaten Trump?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Donald Trump would have been soundly defeated by Bernie Sanders, data suggests.

The big story that is engulfing world media this week is, of course, that Donald Trump will be ascending to the US Presidency, and that the Republican Party has a clear majority in the Houses of Congress. This news has been greeted by many with concern, while others who genuinely voted for Trump are still celebrating – but the people most affected by the win are arguably the Democratic Party, who faces passing Barack Obama’s eight-year legacy into Trump’s hands, with many fearing that much of his work may be undone.

There, too, has been outcry of disappointment in the Democrats – while Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, many media outlets are keen to establish that her one-time Primaries rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, could have been a more effective opposition against Donald Trump. Certainly, the movement around Sanders was bigger than there has been around a US politician for some time, perhaps since Obama came to office – but despite his popularity particularly with young and working-class voters, he was ultimately unsuccessful in his bid to beat Clinton to the punch. But would Sanders have beaten Trump had he reached the final stages of the election?

The answer isn’t as cut and dried as many media outlets are advising – while Sanders would have undoubtedly won over a demographic that has a considerable voice in key battleground states and in Democratic safe zones, it is also argued that Sanders’ policies and political stance in general may have alienated those aligned right of center – Sanders, after all, is a self-proclaimed socialist, and this is not a word that gets applied to mainstream US politicians too often in 2016.

Sanders has charisma, like-ability and a clear vision – but Trump too has a certain charisma, a presence that clearly led him all the way to the White House – and some are suggesting that the Senator may have performed better than Clinton on the grounds that he appealed to more of the general electorate. Whether this is true or not, we will never know – US Uncut is keen to advise that available data suggests Sanders may likely have trumped Trump if it came to the punch, but Democratic voters made their choice alternatively. The bottom line, perhaps, comes from a tweet that the source quotes direct from Donald Trump in May – “I would rather run against Crooked Hillary than Bernie Sanders and that will happen because the books are cooked against Bernie!”.
