Scientists finally pinpoint Jupiter’s birth using “molten rock raindrops”

These cataclysmic collisions created tiny molten droplets called chondrules—microscopic time capsules later preserved in meteorites. New research shows that water vapor explosions from planetesimal impacts explain their origin, while also pinpointing Jupiter’s birth at about 1.8 million years after the solar system began.
