Russia hosts Taliban talks as it seeks regional influence

Russia hosted talks with Taliban leaders in an effort to establish ties with the new rulers of Afghanistan and assert its influence in the region. Following the withdrawal of US forces, Russia and China have engaged with the Taliban despite their differences. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the US withdrawal and expressed hope that the West would not return to Afghanistan.
