Russia extends detention of second US journalist

IndiaTimes Friday, 20 October 2023
Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has been ordered to be detained for an additional three days after failing to register as a "foreign agent." She was working for US-funded media outlet Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty when she was arrested in Kazan. If found guilty, she could face up to five years in jail. Kurmasheva is the second US journalist to be detained by Russia since its conflict with Ukraine began. Russia has been cracking down on independent journalism, with numerous outlets being labeled as "foreign agents."
