Maine mass killing suspect had mental health issues, purchased guns legally, authorities say
Saturday, 28 October 2023 An Army reservist who killed 18 people at a Maine bowling alley and bar purchased his weapons legally, according to authorities. The shooter, identified as Robert Card, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had a history of mental illness, including hearing voices and expressing a desire to harm others. The motive for the rampage is believed to be paranoia and a belief that people were talking about him. Card had not been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, and a simple evaluation or voluntary commitment would not have prohibited him from owning a gun.
