Why Finland is blaming Russia for a sudden influx of migrants on its eastern border
Sunday, 26 November 2023 Russia is accused of driving migrants from the Middle East and Africa to Finland's border as retaliation for Finland joining Nato. There has been a sudden surge in asylum-seekers at Finland's border with Russia, with more than 900 migrants arriving since August. Finnish authorities closed several checkpoints and sent soldiers to erect barriers. The Kremlin denies involvement. The use of migrants as pawns to destabilize Western democracies is seen as part of Russia's hybrid warfare tactics.
Finland's prime minister said Wednesday that the country will close all but its northernmost border crossing with Russia, following a surge in migrants which Helsinki claims Russia is intentionally pushing.
