Microsoft invests $1 bln in OpenAI

Microsoft is getting deeper into artificial intelligence.

It's investing $1 billion in OpenAI.

That's a startup co-founded by Tesla's Elon Musk whose investors include Linked-In cofounder Reid Hoffman and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel.

OpenAI says the investment will help it pursue "artificial general intelligence." AGI is a computing system that aims to master a subject as well as or better than the best human brains.

The multi-year partnership will develop new artificial intelligence supercomputing technologies on Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service.

Microsoft would be OpenAI's "preferred" partner to commercialize new services.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Microsoft shares shot higher Monday, nearing its record high.
