The Coronavirus Pandemic has changed the way the Florence Fire Department deals with calls.

New tonight.

Florence firefighters tell us they have to focus on one threat at a time.

With severe weather moving into our area tonight... the coronavirus is taking a back seat.

Although their severe weather preparations aren't changing, waay 31's breken terry shows us how the coronavirus is changing things firefighters do on a daily basis, anerton told me the number of florence deputy fire chief tim anerton told me the number of calls are down since coronavirus hit north alabama.

Anerton- the public has helped us the public being home there are less people moving around helps all of us.

Not just us at the fire department but everyone involved.

Firefighters are only going to life threatening calls too.

Anerton- if your life is in danger obviously we are here to serve and respond but we have scaled back some of the non essential response duties we've done in the past.

Bridge- chief anerton tells me that every single fire truck has the firefighters gloves and n-95 masks inside them for when they go on calls.

Anerton- we're trying to limit our opportunity to exposure as much as we can.

Firefighters don't share the gloves or masks.

Gloves are thrown away after each call they go on and new ones given.

Officials say they are cleaning and sanitizing the fire houses and trucks more often as well.

They said it is difficult to keep a supply of masks on hand but so
