Writer Oscar Wilde was sent to prison on this day in 1895 till 1897 after being convicted of sodomy.

The famed writer brought attention to his private life in a feud with Sir John Sholto Douglas, whose son was intimately involved with Wilde.

Sabarmati Ashram formerly known as 'Satyagraha Ashram" was founded on May 25, 1915 in Ahmedabad at Kochrab, when Gandhi returned from South Africa, with 25 inmates.

The Ashram was shifted on the bank of river Sabarmati on 17 June, 1917.

Devoted ashramites led a community life in search of Truth and Non-violence under his guidance.

Following the second world war, the British pushed for an end to their mandate in the region and on May 25th 1946, the United Nations approved the end to the British Mandate and Jordan became an independent sovereign state officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan.

On May 25 2001, Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind person to reach the summit of Mt.

Everest.

Weihenmayer lost his vision at age 14 to a rare eye disease.
