Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate Atal Tunnel on 3rd October. While talking to media persons in Shimla, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jairam Thakur said, "Prime Minister is likely to visit Manali on October 03 for inauguration of Atal Tunnel. He will also visit Lahaul after that, according to the proposed plan. It has not been finalised yet." The tunnel is being built in Eastern Pir Panjal range on Leh-Manali Highway of the Himalayas. With this tunnel, Lahaul and Spiti will get all weather connectivity. It has been named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) held protest in Shimla against amendment in labor law passed by state assembly. They said that the five amendments have been done by the state assembly are against the labourers. The labourers under the CITU gathered outside the Himachal Pradesh Assembly held 'Vidhan Saha Gherao Protest'.The state head of the CITU, Vijendra Mehra said, "State Assembly passed five amendments of Industrial Dispute Act, Factory Act, Contract Labour Act, Model Standing Act and Minimum wages Act amendments has been passed by the Assembly are against the labourers." "15 crore people lost their life due to COVID-19, instead of providing help Himachal government attacking them," Vijendra Mehra said.
Members of Students' Federation of India (SFI) held protest in Shimla on September 14. The protest was staged outside Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly against the National Education Policy 2020. SFI members were also anguished over state government's statement of implementing the National Education Policy 2020 first in their state. They banged utensils to show their disagreement to the policy. NEP 2020, approved on July 29 this year, outlines vision of India's new education system.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chiefs of the three defence services and several leaders paid their last respects to former president Pranab Mukherjee at his residence on September 1. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, BJP chief J P Nadda, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal among others also paid homage to the former president. Pranab Mukherjee will be cremated in Delhi today. The former president died on August 31 at the age of 84. He had been operated to remove a blood clot in his brain. Apple growers of Himachal Pradesh's Rampur and its adjacent areas are living under constant fear of loss of their apple crop due to poor road condition after heavy rains in the region. The apple growers are not able to transport their produce to mandis and markets due to the poor road conditions. Most of the apple orchards are in hilly areas and due to poor and slippery roads, drivers couldn't able to transport apple to mandis. Rampur and its adjacent areas' agriculture lands are mostly dominated by apple orchards.
Soon after heavy rains lashed parts of Delhi, waterlogging was witnessed in several parts of the national capital. The situation near Pragati Maidan halted vehicular movement. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted 'Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain'. Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 34.6 C.
Heavy showers overnight and Wednesday caused waterlogging at many places in Mumbai disrupting normal life in the city. Massive traffic snarls were reported from different areas while train services were also disrupted. Streets were water logged in several areas and people had to wade through knee deep water. A bus was stuck in King Circle and passengers were seen holding each other’s hand to get past water logged streets. Railway tracks were also water logged leading to cancellation of several local trains. Water also entered Nair Hospital in Mumbai which is a dedicated Covid facility. Work is underway by the civic body to clear these roads for hassle free commute. According to the India Meteorological Department, Mumbai is expected to receive moderate rains till September 28. This is the heaviest rain the suburbs received this monsoon season and IMD has warned of more rainfall in the city and suburbs. A yellow alert has also been sounded for Wednesday. Cases of coronavirus are growing. In HP's Kangra district, 55 healthcare workers have contracted COVID-19. CMO of Kangra, Gurdarshan Gupta said, "Fifty-five healthcare workers including 34 doctors, 7 staff-nurses and 5 paramedics have contracted COVID-19 in Kangra district so far. Nine police personnel have also tested positive for the disease."
