Prepping Kids for the Fall school yearMayo doctor's advice

Five.

I'm george mallet./// first tonight ?

"* governor walz announced school districts will be choosing the learning plan that is right for them... in person ?

"* distance ?

"* or hyrbid... while following safe learning guidelines.

It's called the safe learning plan.

Walz emphasizes this is a complicated problem that needs to be localized to each school and community.

Where we use the data to drive that decision making but understanding that county level health data has to be coupled with what the physical plant looks like in that building what it looks like for your teachers what are the ages of those teachers what is the localized situation around covid 19... the plan also includes providing a mask to every single student and teacher.

Today we're hearing from mayo clinic doctors on returning to school in person ?

"* and how the virus affects children.

Kimt news 3's annalise george ?

"* i'm here at sunset terrace elementary school.

Studies are showing that elementary aged kids under ten are half as likely to transmit the virus as older children.

Just one of many different factors and research based evidence that will go into schools making this decision.

A mayo clinic pediatrician and pediatric infectious diseases physician livestreamed on facebook this morning to answer parents' questions on kids returning to school in the fall ?

"* virus transmission ?

"* and what covid?

"* 19 symp look like in children.

If your student ?

"(is?

"( going back t school in the fall ?

"* the doctors recommend getting your children involved in mask wearing sooner than later.

Letting them pick out the mask may help make them comfortable with it.

They encourage families to be flexible and have plans in place in case your child's school has an outbreak and needs to close.

With the decision to learn in person left up to the school districts to decide ?

"* the doctors note that community transmission is high in some areas of the state ?

"* and low in others.

Those different areas will be very different and its really important that everyone look at what is going on in their local area and community as they try and make these decisions.

We know that countries who have done this successfully, those are the countries that have reopened in person schooling in the setting of low rates of community transmission the doctor stresses that if your child has any kind of covid?

"*9 symptoms ?

"* even something tht might not seem like a big deal ?

"* such as a runny nose ?

"* your kid home from school.

They encourage schools to be flexible with children who need to miss a school day because of this.

Live in thank you annalise.

The doctors explain that although the numbers are showing that children are more likely to be asymptomatic or have mild illness from the virus ?

"* it's important to remember that there still are kids who have become severely ill or died.
