2nd suicide in front of Fort Wayne police sparks mental health conversation

Police said a man in Fort Wayne shot and killed himself after officers pulled him over after receiving a call that he was having mental health issues Thursday morning on the city's northeast side.

A little after 7-30 this morning, officers responded to a quiet community in the northeast side of town with reports of a domestic dispute.

When cops arrived, it was too late.the man had taken his life.

Fox 55's brianna dahlquist spoke to a mental health expert about why the time is now to have that talk with your loved ones.

Mary reed wishes she would have known her neighbor was thinking of taking his own life.

"we would've said come on in, please let's talk.

Or let me come outside with you and let's talk.

It was the second time this week a man shot himself in front of police and now police and mental health experts are pleading with those who are feeling down to reach out for the help.jennifer barnes of mental health america of northeast indiana says when it comes to mental health, it's time to erase the stigma."stop the stigma of "that person is so selfish, you don't know what that person was thinking or going through.

" barnes says she also wants people to know its healthy to talk about mental health."mental health is just as important to physical health.

Sometimes, if you have thyroid problems or high blood pressure you can go to the urgent care or doctor.

Mental health is the same thing."

Barnes knows what it's like to lose someone to suicide and want people to know; theres support.

She says that even if you arent open just yet, just being there could be therapeutic.

"it's a good resource to let you know that we're all in this rollercoaster together."

Barnes wants everyone to know that their feelings are valid.

"it's okay not to be okay but you are in fort wayne, im brianna dahlquist.
