High school football during the pandemic

Another week of friday night football - and in the shoals - two teams that were originally set to play in august - finally got the chance tonight.

School leaders put several coronavirus safety precautions in place as deshler hosted muscle shoals.

Waay31's megan reyna explains how this season is also different for cheer and band.

Megan says: instead of a big halftime show deshler's band took to the field for a pregame show.

I spoke to the band director who said it allows them a longer time to perform since their protocols require everyone off the field before a new group can enter.

The band members also wore face coverings when not playing their instruments.

As for the cheerleaders - they were still able to stay on the sidelines but six feet apart so the masks can stay off.

And all these changes are worth it for the deshler community.

Craig weaks, deshler band director weaks says:"we're a little doubtful at times just about being whether this was going to happen or anything, but through the work of our administration and those who have really worked hard to get this possible for us, the kids are really excited i can tell that they wanted to do this, so we made every attempt we could to make to where the kids could come to play and perform."

For fans they also were required to have face masks on to enter the game.

Seating was scattered with groups staying separated.

Megan says: capacity was also at 50 percent and throughout the game - the announcer reminded folks to continue to social distance and wear their masks.
