Great opportunity for West Bengal to engage in image makeover: Governor Dhankhar
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar held a press conference after meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 09.
He said, "2021 is a challenging year for West Bengal as it goes for Assembly polls.
It is a great opportunity for state of West Bengal to engage in makeover of image as unfortunately, so far elections in WB have been plagued with rampant violence, compromising basic rights of voters and role of bureaucracy and police.
It is time for us to set an example by engaging into best practices so that every voter is in a position to freely, fairly express their franchise in a peaceful atmosphere where violence has no role.
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on January 09 appealed to not indulge in any divisive activity. He said, "My heart pains that ignoring constitutional provisions, a child of 'Maa Bharti' is called an outsider in West Bengal because he does not belong to the state. We all are the children of 'Maa Bharti' and we believe in our unity. No person living in this land can be an outsider. And that being so, I appeal to everyone please let us not engage into such kind of divisive activity. I ensure no one in the country will go contrary to this because this is theme and soul of Indian constitution."
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar arrived at Delhi Airport. He is scheduled to meet Home Minister Amit Shah on January 09. "I will call on Union Home Minister Amit Shah tomorrow," he said.

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya reacted on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's statement calling the party "more dangerous than Naxals". He said that BJP doesn't need CM Banerjee's certificate that it is dangerous or not. "People of the country have made Narendra Modi Prime Minister second time so we don't need Mamata Banerjee's certificate,' he said. He added that BJP will only choose those TMC leaders who are not indulged in anti-national activities.
Ranjan Banerjee, senior vice-president of Aditya Birla Group, joined the BJP in Kolkata on January 20. He joined the party in the presence of BJP's national vice president Mukul Roy. Meanwhile, Arindam Bhattacharya, a former Congress MLA who later switched to TMC joined BJP. He joined BJP in the presence of party leader Kailash Vijayvargiya in New Delhi. Speaking to ANI, Ranjan Banerjee said, "I thank BJP for giving me this opportunity to serve the people of the state. We need to bring industries here so that people can get employment." Bengal is going for polls in the mid of 2021.
Days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she would contest the upcoming state assembly election from Nandigram, now her former aide turned BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has hit back. While Adhikari refused to confirm his candidature from Nandigram, he said that he would guarantee the victory of the candidate the BJP fields in Nandigram. βMamata Banerjee has announced to contest from there, relying on 62,000 votes but I have 2.13 lakh people who chant 'Jai Shri Ram,β Adhikari said. Meanwhile, in a fresh setback to the Trinamool Congress, Arindam Bhattacharya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and said that he wants to join PM Modiβs mission of making an Atmanirbhar Bengal. Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting with Delhi Police officials on January 19. He was accompanied by Minister of State G Kishan Reddy. The meeting was held ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi next week.
