Pupils to return to classrooms in Scotland but lockdown will continue into March
Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirms a February 22 return to school for some youngsters will go ahead – but warned people not to see the move as a return to normality.While pupils in P1 to P3 will be back in their classrooms from Monday, along with some senior students needing to do practical work for qualifications, the First Minister promised a £100 million package to help “accelerate school recovery”.Senior pupils will also need to stick to two-metre social distancing within schools and on school buses, while Covid-19 testing will be made available to them and teachers.
Humza Yousaf has announced his resignation as Scotland's first minister ahead of forthcoming confidence votes. Mr Yousaf had been battling for his political survival after terminating the power-sharing deal between the SNP and Scottish Greens on Thursday. He entered Holyrood in 2011, first as a regional MSP and then as the representative for Glasgow Pollok five years later. In 2012, he became a junior minister in Alex Salmond’s government, before being promoted to the Scottish Cabinet during Nicola Sturgeon’s premiership. Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has been charged by police as part of a probe into the party's finances. The husband of Scotland’s former first minister Nicola Sturgeon was charged on Thursday in connection with the alleged embezzlement of funds.
