Union Minister of State for Sports Kiren Rijiju along with Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha inaugurated Khelo India State Centre of Excellence for rowing in Srinagar. Built at renowned Dal Lake, the centre will provide an opportunity to water sports enthusiasts in the region. Local residents and authorities believe that this centre will also play a key role in boosting adventure tourism. This is the second such centre with one in the fencing discipline already operating for a significant time now.
The first convocation of 31 students of National Institute of Fashion Technology Srinagar was held in Srinagar's Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre on April 09. Textiles Minister Smriti Irani was the chief guest on the occasion and Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju was the Guest of Honour at institute's convocation. JandK Governor Manoj Sinha also attended the convocation via video conferencing from Jammu's Raj Bhawan. NIFT Srinagar offers two undergraduate courses in Fashion Design and Fashion Communication of four years respectively. With an aim to fortify the bond of love and communal harmony among the people of Jammu and Kashmir, a religious conference was organized at the Sher-e-Kashmiri Convention Centre in Srinagar city. Inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, the conference urged religious leaders to spread the message of peace and brotherhood among the citizens of the union territory. The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir is an ocean of spirituality and that multicultural harmony has always been one of the key features of the territory. The daylong conference witnessed the participation of around 550 religious leaders including Moulvis and Muftis with around 200 youngsters and 200 women. Representatives also discussed the role of religion in the betterment of society and how it can build strong connection among people of different faiths. Events like these not only spread a message of religious coexistence but also paves a way for building a peaceful and harmonious society.
At least six people died and four got injured after a mini bus fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda on April 12. Rescue team was present at the spot and injured persons have been admitted to a hospital in Jammu for treatment, said Doda CMO Dr Yakoob Mir. More details are awaited.
Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on April12 appealed to the youth of Union Territory to leave weapons and start advocating for the welfare of JandK. Underlining the Bodo peace talks in Assam, she also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not initiating similar peace deals in Kashmir. "We ask our nation to give us back what was snatched away from us. If you want people of Jammu and Kashmir, you'll have to reinstate our honour. There's no other way. I say this to my country. Why does BJP get angry when I say it? Will I ask from Pakistan? If PM Narendra Modi appeals to militants of Assam to join the mainstream and leave their weapons, if talks are held with Boro (Bodo), then what is the difficulty in doing the same in Jammu and Kashmir? Why is there no option besides jail? How long will this injustice continue?," said PDP chief. She further said, "Nobody will understand the language of weapons. If you present your views peacefully, the world will listen to you. If you speak language of guns you'll be killed and you'll gain nothing. I appeal to Jammu and Kashmir youth to leave weapons and talk. They'll have to listen one day."
Smart classes are not only transforming education in highly paid private schools, but it is gradually making inroads in government schools set up in the backward and rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Students pursuing education in Government Girls Middle school in Ghordi area of District Udhampur, now have access to audiovisual mode of learning also known as smart class. The main aim of smart classes is to impart quality education to the students hailing from the rural and backward area. The initiative was taken by school teachers; they contributed money and took out a chunk from school funds to bring this idea to ground reality. Students expressed their delight over the modification that engulfed the education system in the district. All COVID protocols were adhered to at the school. Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, delivered a clear warning to other nations on April 9. Delhi's Health Minister Satyendar Jain on April 08 said that Union Territory Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had written the Union government that vaccination should be opened for all. "Chief Minister had written to Centre that vaccination should be opened for all. We have made 2 more requests that vaccination should be allowed at least for all adults. Secondly, it should be allowed even at camp settings and not only at health care facilities," said Health Minister Jain.
Locals of Anantnag's Tailwani village in South Kashmir have lauded the construction of a new type of Primary Health Centre (PHC). Construction of PHC is expected to be completed in a few weeks and is expected to ease the difficulties they faced due to lack of medical care facilities in the town. "Construction work on this Public Health Centre (PHC) was started two years ago at the estimated cost of Rs 3.51 crore and within one month this new PHC building will be handed over to Jammu and Kashmir Health Department," Assistant Executive Engineer Public works Department (RandB) Syed Ishfaq Ahmad told ANI. People had to face many problems due to lack of medical care facilities in an emergency situation like deliveries and accident as they had admitted their patients either to district hospital Anantnag or Srinagar. The new Public Health Centre (PHC) in Tailwani village in Achabal block of district Anantnag) in South Kashmir is the latest to join new initiated by the administration of the Union Territory for the welfare of the people.
National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah tested positive for Covid-19. In a tweet this morning, the National Conference leader's son Omar Abdullah informed about his father testing positive. He also urged everyone who came in contact with his father recently to get tested. Replying to his tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him a speedy recovery. "Praying for the good health and speedy recovery of Dr. Farooq Abdullah Ji. Also praying for your and the entire family’s good health @OmarAbdullah," PM Modi tweeted. Omar replied to PM Modi, saying, "My father and the rest of the family join me in thanking you for your wishes and prayers @narendramodi ji." National Conference president Farooq Abdullah tests positive for COVID-19. The information was confirmed by Abdullah's son, Omar Abdullah, who took to Twitter on Tuesday. "My father has tested positive for COVID-19 and is showing some symptoms. I will be self-isolating along with other family members until we get ourselves tested," Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter. "I request anyone who has come in to contact with us over the last few days to take all the mandated precautions," he further added. The 83-year-old was found infected with coronavirus on March 30. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 death toll in JandK rose to 1,989 on March 28 with four more fatalities, while 309 new cases pushed the infection tally to 1,29,993, as per officials.
Terrorists launched an attack at a municipal office in Jammu & Kashmir on March 29. The attack during a meeting of councillors led to the death of one of them. A police personnel also died in the strike. After the attack in north Kashmir's Sopore, massive security was deployed in the area to track the killers.
