Rescuers help down slow loris trapped for hours on high-voltage powerline

A slow loris was rescued in western Indonesia after climbing a powerline and wandering onto the high-voltage cables.

A slow loris was rescued in western Indonesia after climbing a powerline and wandering onto the high-voltage cables.

In footage filmed in Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra, on Tuesday (June 22), the loris can be seen going back and forth across the cable between two power poles.

"We are worried that the slow loris could die from electrocution, or dare to jump and endanger local residents," said Elisa, a local resident.

Animal rescue team from Bukittinggi Reptile Animal Community (B-Reptanic) Rescue was called in to help the slow loris get off the cable.

The team first used a long bamboo stick to tempt the primate to climb down, and after half an hour of effort, the slow loris eventually climbed off the cable by reaching for a power pole.

The rescue team then immediately caught the slow loris with their hands covered in jackets and sacks.

Waldi BW, one of the rescuers, said that the slow loris bit his thumb during its capture, but its teeth didn't injure his thumb and only left bite marks on his jacket.

The slow loris was put in a sack and then taken to the green area on the outskirts of Sianok Canyon.

According to Waldi, the slow loris was in very good health, with no scars or electric burns found, before being released to safety.
