PM calls investigation into Tory chairman Zahawi’s tax bill

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is ordering an investigation into Conservative Party chairman Nadhim Zahawi’s tax affairs.

Mr Zahawi paid a penalty to resolve a multimillion-pound tax dispute with HM Revenue & Customs between July and September last year, whilst he was serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Boris Johnson’s cabinet.

The MP for Stratford-on-Avon has welcomed the investigation, saying: “I am confident I acted properly throughout.” Report by Jonesia.

Yvette Cooper backs Angela Rayner amid questions over tax

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has expressed her support for Angela Rayner despite questions surrounding whether the deputy leader should have paid capital gains tax on the sale of her old council house in 2015. Ms Cooper hopes a line will be drawn under the issue when Ms Rayner sets out the facts to the police and HMRC, and argues the Conservatives are attempting to focus on this from 10 years ago rather than the current pressures on the NHS and the cost of living. This Day in History: William Shakespeare Is Born

This Day in History:, William Shakespeare Is Born. April 23, 1564. The most-performed dramatist of all-time was most likely born on this day in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Little is known about Shakespeare's early years, mainly because of his unremarkable living situation. He would have studied Latin and the classics in grammar school, but Shakespeare received no university education. Instead, he married Anne Hathaway at the age of 18, who gave birth to their first child six months later. Shakespeare emerged as a playwright of note in London in the 1590s. Over the next twenty years, he would pen some of the most significant works of the English language, including 'Hamlet,' 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'King Lear.'. Shakespeare died in the place of his birth, on the day he is thought to have been born, in 1616
