USA green-lights depleted uranium for Kyiv; Moscow calls it 'an indicator of inhumanity'
Yesterday, the Pentagon announced a new security assistance package worth up to $175 million for Ukraine, including depleted uranium ammunition for M1 Abrams tanks the US plans to deliver to Ukraine this fall.
It is the first time the US will be sending the controversial armour-piercing munitions to Kyiv.
The Pentagon said the military aid would also include anti-armour systems, tactical air navigation systems and additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems …or the HIMARS.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced new aid for Ukraine in a visit to Kyiv, including about $665m in new military and civilian security assistance, as he hailed the months-long counteroffensive against the Russian forces in the country’s southeast.
The Pentagon has confirmed it is conducting a “capability review” to reassess whether military aid to Ukraine aligns with America’s shifting defense priorities. Chief spokesperson Sean Parnell said the U.S. is taking a hard look at promised weapons deliveries — some of which are now halted — to ensure national interests come first. The move follows the White House’s decision to stop key shipments of air defense ammunition, artillery shells, and missiles previously pledged under the Biden administration.
With President Trump’s “America First” policy reshaping foreign aid strategy, the Pentagon appears to be pivoting away from prolonged foreign entanglements. Ukrainian officials have slammed the halt as betrayal, warning it weakens their resistance against Russia’s advances.
