₹2,000 bank notes continue to be legal tender; 97.26% of the notes retrieved: RBI | Oneindia News
The central bank revealed that nearly 97.26% of these high-denomination notes have been successfully returned to the banking system.
In a statement released earlier today, the RBI disclosed that as of November 30, 2023, only about ₹9,760 crore worth of ₹2,000 bank notes remain with the public.
This marks a significant reduction from the ₹3.56 lakh crore in circulation as of May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of ₹2,000 bank notes was announced.
RBI's action against Paytm and Kotak Mahindra Bank for non-compliance raised concerns. Kotak Mahindra's failure to meet data storage requirements led to RBI directives. Similar actions were taken against HDFC Bank in 2020. The events underscore the need for stronger regulatory mechanisms.
