Russia has launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began, according to Ukrainian officials. Overnight, a staggering 537 aerial weapons — including 477 drones and decoys, and 60 missiles — were fired at targets across Ukraine.
Ukraine's air force reported that 249 were shot down and 226 were likely disrupted by electronic jamming. Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s air force, called the strike “the most massive air attack” yet. Areas far from the frontlines, including western Ukraine, were hit. Poland scrambled jets to protect its airspace. Casualties included one dead in Kherson and six injured in Cherkasy, including a child. This assault follows a wave of similar attacks earlier this month, which had already been labelled the most powerful at that point in the war. Damage was reported in Kharkiv, where multiple residential buildings and houses were struck. The escalation signals a grim turn in the nearly three-year conflict.

In their first call since the Ukraine war began, Russian President Vladimir Putin confronted French President Emmanuel Macron over Western involvement in the conflict. Putin blamed NATO expansion and years of Western military support for turning Ukraine into an “anti-Russia bridgehead.” He warned Macron that any French troops in Ukraine would be seen as legitimate targets, risking escalation to World War III. Putin reaffirmed Russia’s terms for peace, insisting any resolution must reflect battlefield realities and end Western interference.

Russia accuses Ukraine of chemical warfare after claiming to uncover drone bombs containing chloropicrin, a banned toxic agent, in Donetsk. Russian authorities say the devices, intended for UAV deployment, were found in a Ukrainian weapons cache and filed WMD-related charges. If verified, this would mark a dangerous escalation in the war. Ukraine has not responded to the allegation. Global watchdogs may now face pressure to investigate the use of banned chemical agents in the conflict.
