Icelandic Authorities Offer Update as , Volcano Continues to Erupt.

On March 16, a volcano in Iceland erupted for the fourth time since December.

.

'The Independent' reports that the volcano has continued to spew smoke and lava into the air for days following the fourth eruption.

According to authorities, both infrastructure and a nearby fishing town remain safe for the time being.

Since the last eruption in February, magma has been accumulating underground on the Reykjanes peninsula near Iceland's capital of Reykjavik.

Authorities said the warning time for the March 16 eruption was only 15 minutes before molten rock began spewing from the 1.9 mile long fissure.

On March 18, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said that lava flows had subsided in one of the three active areas of the fissure.

'The Independent' reports that man-made barriers have successfully diverted lava flows away from infrastructure, including the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant.

The nearby town of Grindavik, a fishing town with a population around 4,000, was evacuated during an eruption in November and again in February.

The defences at Grindavik proved their value ... they have guided the lava flow in the intended direction, Local utility company HS Orka, via 'The Independent'.

The March 16 eruption was the seventh to occur on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021
