Miliband: UK’s clean power push is route to energy security
Ed Miliband tells global energy ministers and industry bosses that the UK's clean power push is about security as much as fighting climate change.
Speaking at a global energy security summit in London, the energy secretary tells delegates: "As long as energy can be weaponised against us, our countries and our citizens are vulnerable and exposed”.

Ed Miliband insists the government will not split the UK’s energy market into regions if it causes bills to rise. Under the plan, different areas of the country would pay different rates for their electricity, based on local supply and demand. The energy secretary says, “my test on any change we make is will it cut bills and will it cut bills across the country”. Report by Blairm. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the UK of playing a direct role in Ukraine’s alleged terrorist attacks inside Russia. Speaking at the 'Forum of the Future 2050' in Moscow, Lavrov said Ukraine would be “helpless” without British assistance, citing deadly sabotage incidents and coordinated drone strikes across Russian territory. Lavrov claimed the U.S. has pulled back, leaving Britain “100%” involved. The UK has declined to comment on operational matters, while Moscow’s ambassador to London also pointed to UK-supplied geospatial data as key to recent attacks.

Sir Keir Starmer says a stabilised economy has allowed the government to reinstate most winter fuel payments. Emperor penguins, the largest of their kind, are facing a growing threat as shrinking sea ice puts their future at risk. The birds rely on stable ice for up to eight months to raise their chicks, but as the Southern Ocean warms, that vital platform is melting too quickly. Scientists are alarmed by satellite data, which shows a sharp decline in colony numbers, with some areas disappearing twice as fast as predicted just seven years ago. Storms, changing weather and predators like orca whales are also contributing to their decline. Report by Covellm.
