The UN’s top human rights official, Volker Türk, has strongly condemned U.S. sanctions on four ICC judges as “deeply corrosive” to international justice. These judges, who ruled on cases involving alleged war crimes by U.S. forces in Afghanistan and arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, now face sanctions from the Biden administration. Türk warned that targeting international judges for executing their duties endangers the rule of law. The EU has backed the ICC, vowing to counter these sanctions and defend the court’s independence from political pressure.

Exports to Germany halved in April, prompting emergency talks between EU officials and China’s commerce ministry. Beijing’s opaque and security-heavy licensing system is delaying shipments and pushing prices 4–7 times higher. The U.S. has accused China of violating trade agreements, as manufacturers in both the EU and U.S. now face critical material shortages.
