Russia has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of arresting Telegram founder Pavel Durov to meddle in Romania’s 2024 elections.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claims France acted to suppress conservative voices on Telegram during the campaign.
Durov earlier stated French intelligence requested censorship on his platform.
He was detained in August 2023, charged, and released on bail in March.
The controversy comes amid disputed election results, disqualified candidates, and allegations of foreign interference, with Durov now offering to testify before Romanian authorities to support electoral transparency.
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has intercepted a Russian agent caught red-handed planting a bomb in a civilian apartment in Rivne, Western Ukraine. The suspect, a 27-year-old man from Lviv, was allegedly recruited via Telegram by Russian intelligence with promises of “easy money.”
The device was intended to be detonated remotely in a densely populated city center, aiming to inflict maximum civilian casualties and spread fear. The suspect now faces terrorism-related charges, conspiracy, and illegal possession of explosives.
Authorities say this plot is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting civilians far from the frontlines, often exploiting vulnerable individuals with criminal or addiction histories. This is yet another stark reminder that Putin’s war is not limited to the battlefield.
