‘Very Complicated …’ US Doubles Down On Strained Trade Ties With India As Modi Rejects Trade Deal
The India-US relationship has entered turbulent waters after US treasury secretary Scott Bessent warned that despite being “very complicated,” the two nations would eventually “come together.” His remarks came as Washington’s additional 25% tariff on Indian goods took effect, punishing New Delhi for buying Russian oil.
Combined with earlier duties, tariffs on Indian exports now reach a staggering 50%, hitting garments, jewellery, footwear, and chemicals—impacting over half of India’s $87 billion exports to America.
Bessent accused India of “profiteering” off Russian crude and dragging its feet in trade negotiations, while India dismissed the tariffs as “unjustified” and “unacceptable.” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar bluntly told the West, “If you don’t like it, don’t buy.” Despite rising tensions, Bessent expressed confidence that President Trump and PM Modi’s strong personal ties could eventually heal the rift.
Trump has officially ruled out Scott Bessent for the next Fed chair, telling CNBC that Bessent “wants to stay where he is.” The decision follows the surprise resignation of Fed Governor Adriana Kugler, giving Trump another opportunity to reshape the Federal Reserve with loyalists. Remaining candidates include Kevin Warsh, Kevin Hassett, and Fed Governor Chris Waller—whom Trump praised as “very good.” With Powell’s term ending in 2026, Trump is considering naming a “shadow chair” to counteract his policies and align the Fed with his low-rate agenda.

Donald Trump has launched a blistering attack on billionaire George Soros and his son Alexander, calling for them to face federal racketeering charges under the RICO Act. In a fiery Truth Social post, Trump labeled Soros and his allies as “psychopaths” who have caused “great damage” to America. He accused their network of fueling violent protests, riots, and unrest across U.S. cities, vowing they will not be allowed to “rip apart America.” The escalation marks Trump’s most aggressive rhetoric yet against Soros, tying him to civil unrest, Black Lives Matter funding, and even the Russiagate narrative.

In a dramatic turn, the Kremlin has called for details of Ukraine peace talks to remain strictly confidential. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that public debate could derail negotiations, stressing that secrecy is key to results. Analysts believe Putin is wary of European leaders—who have pledged strong security guarantees to Kyiv—and instead trusts Donald Trump as a “better negotiator.” Following Trump’s meetings with both Putin and Zelensky, speculation mounts: is Moscow sidelining Europe to cut a Trump-driven deal over Ukraine?

A German daily, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), has claimed that Donald Trump tried calling PM Narendra Modi four times after imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods—yet Modi never picked up. The paper headlined the report “Trump Calls, But Modi Doesn’t Answer”, noting India’s refusal to bow under U.S. pressure. Unlike China, Canada, Mexico, and the EU that partially compromised, New Delhi stood firm, prioritizing farmers and domestic industries—signaling U.S.-India ties have hit their lowest point.

Indian garment exporters are facing a major tariff shock as the Trump administration imposes a steep 50 percent duty on Indian exports. The move directly impacts garment exporters, shoe manufacturers, and leather industries that heavily rely on the US market. With Indian garment exporters already working on razor-thin margins, this tariff threatens millions of jobs and billions in trade revenues. Competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh could benefit, while Indian garment exporters brace for losses. The Modi government is expected to step in with relief measures as Indian garment exporters explore new markets and diversification strategies. Oneindia’s Pankaj Mishra explains.
