Ex-Brazil president barred from running for office until 2030
Saturday, 1 July 2023 Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has been barred from public office until 2030 after a panel of judges concluded he abused power and cast unfounded doubts on the country's electronic voting system.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday (June 30) a decision by Brazil's federal electoral court (TSE) to bar him from public office until 2030 for his conduct during last year's fraught election was a "stab in the back."
Heavy rain in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state caused ten deaths and left 21 missing. Governor Leite declared it the worst disaster in state history, seeking federal aid. President Lula plans to visit. Storms destroyed roads, collapsed bridges, and displaced over 3,400 people. Further heavy precipitation poses ongoing flood risks across the region.
