First in 45 years: Rising Yamuna waters reach walls of Taj Mahal
Tuesday, 18 July 2023 A rising Yamuna river touched the walls of the Taj Mahal in Agra and submerged a garden behind the monument on Monday for the first time in 45 years. ASI officials said the mausoleum was designed to prevent water from entering the main monument. The water level in the river Yamuna in Mathura district touched 167.28 m, which is above the danger mark of 166 m.
Floodwaters from the Yamuna River have reached the walls of the 17th century mausoleum as water levels in the river cross 150 metres β the highest since 1978.
