Speeding caused 71 per cent of all road deaths last year: Government data

Speeding was responsible for 70 per cent of road deaths in India in 2022, which saw a record-breaking 168,491 fatalities and 440,000 injuries. Failure to use safety devices, such as helmets and seat belts, was the second leading cause of deaths. Over 50,000 two-wheeler riders died due to not wearing helmets, while 16,715 deaths were linked to not wearing seat belts. India has the highest number of road fatalities globally, accounting for 11% of total deaths.
