Cancer cases in India estimated to rise from 14 lakh per year to 20 lakh by 2040
Saturday, 4 November 2023 The incidence rate of cancer in India has not increased as rapidly as in the West, but the absolute number of new cases is rising due to population growth and better diagnoses. Currently, 1.4 million new cases are detected each year, projected to increase to 2 million by 2040. The highest incidence rates are found in the Northeastern states, but even large metropolitan areas have rates within the range of 100-110 per 100,000. While cervical cancer rates have declined, breast, lung, and oral cancer continue to rise. The increase in absolute numbers is placing a burden on healthcare facilities, prompting the recommendation for the government to subsidize the establishment of more cancer hospitals.
