Panel vetting criminal justice bills adopts draft
The parliamentary standing committee has adopted its draft report with recommendations for the three criminal justice bills, including the reintroduction of a provision similar to Section 377 of the IPC to make non-consensual sex between same-sex adults an offense. The report also suggests criminalizing adultery in a gender-neutral manner. Four opposition MPs have expressed dissent, questioning the speed of the deliberations and lack of consultations. Once enacted, the bills will replace the British-era penal code, criminal procedure code, and evidence act. The dissent notes of the MPs will be appended to the committee's report.
