After ordeal, government to review SOP on tunnels

The road ministry will review SOPs for tunnel construction and maintenance in light of the Silkyara tunnel collapse. Measures will be taken to prevent similar mishaps. The new SOP will include safety requirements, contract management provisions, and a risk matrix. A safety audit mechanism and the provision of safe escape passages for workers will be considered. Geological mapping in the Himalayan regions will also receive renewed focus. A panel of experts will be set up to investigate the collapse and determine how to resume work on the tunnel.
