As water stagnates across Chennai, risk of illness rises

IndiaTimes Saturday, 9 December 2023
Infectious diseases experts in Chennai are warning that a deadly bacteria, Burkholderia pseudomallei, which causes melioidosis, could quickly spread in flooded areas. This bacteria, seen in numerous patients after the 2015 floods, can be fatal and poses a greater risk to those with diabetes or chronic renal disease. Experts are pushing for policies to improve diagnosis, initiate early treatment, and reduce complications and deaths. They are also advocating for melioidosis to be made a notifiable disease to increase awareness among doctors and improve diagnoses.
