Defence Ministry clears 70,000 Sig Sauer assault rifles for Indian Army
Tuesday, 12 December 2023 Indian Army to receive 70,000 more Sig Sauer assault rifles for troops in counterterrorism operations and other duties; approval given at high-level Defence Ministry meeting; forces currently engaged in military standoff with China and counterterrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir; already using over 70,000 Sig Sauer rifles in Ladakh and Kashmir; rifles chosen for longer range and higher lethality than INSAS Rifle or AK-47; also acquiring AK-203 and AK-103 for enhanced capabilities.
The forest department in Nainital has called for the assistance of the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army to combat a relentless forest fire that has been raging for over 36 hours, consuming numerous hectares of lush greenery. Helicopters have been deployed by the district administration to aid in firefighting efforts. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced plans to convene a meeting to address the escalating situation of the Nainital forest fire in Haldwani district.
