Wednesday, 27 December 2023 On Wednesday, India's health ministry reported 529 new cases of Covid-19 in a 24-hour period, bringing the total active infection count to 4,093. The updated data at 8 am indicated three additional fatalities within that timeframe, with two from Karnataka and one from Gujarat. Although the daily case count had decreased to double digits until December 5, a resurgence has occurred due to the emergence of a new variant and the onset of cold weather conditions.
A new, fast-spreading COVID-19 variant named JN.1 now makes up 44% of all cases nationwide, more than doubling its share from the week before, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lilia Luciano reports.

NBC reports that declining numbers left
many police departments with a shortage of
officers, which resulted in slower response times.

At least a dozen smaller police departments in
the nation have been forced to disband, leaving those
municipalities reliant upon state or county police forces.
