Petition filed in Supreme Court against new criminal laws passed by Parliament
A petition challenging the overhaul of India's penal codes has been filed in the Supreme Court. Three new laws that replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act were enacted without parliamentary debate. The laws are considered more draconian than the colonial British laws, allowing for extended police custody and enabling police torture. The petition seeks a stay on the operation of the laws and the constitution of an expert committee to evaluate their viability.
