Halal certification ban: SC issues notice to Centre, UP government on plea challenging notification

IndiaTimes Friday, 5 January 2024
The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government on a plea seeking the quashing of a notification that banned the manufacture, sale, storage, and distribution of halal-certified products. Two petitions were filed by Jamiat Ulama-E-Maharashtra and Halal India Pvt. Ltd., challenging the ban imposed by the Uttar Pradesh government. The petitioners argue that the notification is arbitrary and based on unreasonable classification, as it singles out halal certification based on religion.
