Weekly Covid cases up 5%; fall in Kerala, but rise in 2 states
Sunday, 7 January 2024 Covid-19 cases in the country, currently on the upswing due to the spread of a new JN.1 subvariant, registered only a marginal 5% rise in the past week, with infections continuing to dip sharply in Kerala while increasing steadily in Karnataka and Maharashtra, among the major states. India reported 31 fatalities due to the virus, nearly the same as in the previous week (29). The country logged 4,862 fresh cases during the week (December 31-January 6) as compared to 4,652 in the previous seven days.

NBC reports that declining numbers left
many police departments with a shortage of
officers, which resulted in slower response times.

According to Wexler, law enforcement , "isn't out of the woods yet.".
At least a dozen smaller police departments in
the nation have been forced to disband, leaving those
municipalities reliant upon state or county police forces.
