'Abuse of power by Gujarat government': SC sends Bilkis case convicts back to jail

Calling it an "abuse of power", Supreme Court on Monday quashed the Gujarat government's decision to grant remission to 11 convicts who gang-raped Bilkis Bano and killed 14 of her family members during the 2002 communal riots and directed them to surrender before the jail authority in two weeks, one-and-a-half years after they were granted liberty by the state. The court said the state acted on the basis of "direction issued by this court but contrary to the letter and spirit of law".
