India-China border row: Special representatives of both countries to meet in Beijing
Monday, 16 December 2024 India and China's special representatives are scheduled to meet in Beijing on Wednesday to discuss normalizing relations following a recent troop disengagement agreement in eastern Ladakh. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese diplomat Wang Yi will lead the 23rd meeting of the Special Representatives mechanism, aiming to address the ongoing border dispute and improve bilateral ties strained since 2020.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to confirm direct tariff negotiations with China, suggesting that Beijing faces severe economic fallout if current trade barriers persist. Speaking to reporters, Bessent cited potential Chinese job losses in the millions and argued that the U.S. trade deficit puts pressure on China to act. While avoiding specifics on communications, he hinted at the unsustainable nature of China’s tariff stance. Beijing denies ongoing talks. The standoff continues, clouded by diplomatic silence and sharp warnings of economic instability from Washington.

President Trump spoke to China's Xi about the ongoing tariff battle, claiming both nations are in an escalating tit-for-tat trade war. While China has denied formal negotiations, Trump is confident that a deal is imminent in the coming weeks. He indicated a "number" that would make China comfortable, but the tariffs continue to cause market uncertainty and global recession fears. With China offering exemptions for critical goods, businesses hope these measures will ease tensions and stabilize supply chains. But, Beijing is prepared for a long-term fight if necessary.

China has accused the US of pursuing “two-faced” policies, slamming Washington for imposing tariffs despite Beijing’s efforts to cooperate on global issues. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that China will “resolutely counter” pressure as tensions escalate. In response, China has imposed its own tariffs on US goods and taken the dispute to the WTO. The trade war, which began in 2018 under Trump, continues to disrupt global markets. Beijing insists it won’t tolerate suppression while Washington cites concerns over trade imbalances and fentanyl flows.

China and Russia will continue promoting the “correct view” of World War II history, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. He emphasized both nations' sacrifices in defeating fascism and vowed to defend the global order led by the UN. Wang hailed China-Russia ties as “tenacious” and not influenced by external forces. With the 80th anniversary of WWII’s end approaching in 2025, Beijing and Moscow aim to counter historical distortions. Russia has criticized the West’s alleged attempts to rewrite history, particularly regarding the Soviet Union’s role in Nazi Germany’s defeat.
