India's Mach 8 Leap: How Project Vishnu puts us in the hypersonic club
Thursday, 4 September 2025 () Traditional supersonic missiles like the BrahMos travel at around Mach 3 (3 times the speed of sound). Hypersonic weapons, by contrast, operate at Mach 5 and beyond. India's new ET-LDHCM, powered by a scramjet engine, can touch Mach 8 - about 11,000 km/h.
Speaking at a public rally in Kashi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Operation Sindoor sent a strong message to the world—that those who target India will not escape, even if they hide underground. He criticised the Opposition for raising doubts about the mission’s intent and outcome. PM Modi also praised Uttar Pradesh's rising stature in India’s defence sector, announcing that BrahMos missiles will soon be manufactured in Lucknow.
