Rwanda and South Africa race to bring F1 back to Africa
Thursday, 30 January 2025 Rwanda and South Africa hope to host an African grand prix for the first time since 1993, but several expensive obstacles stand in their way.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrives in the U.S. aiming to “reset” strained relations with Washington. His visit, expected to include a meeting with President Donald Trump, follows a period of deepening tensions, especially after Trump granted asylum to 59 white South Africans, claiming they face “genocide.” Ramaphosa defends his government’s land reforms and denies racial persecution. With trade, investment, and diplomacy on the table, the trip marks a critical juncture in U.S.–South Africa ties—the frostiest in decades.

U.S President Donald Trump has made headlines once again, this time offering asylum to white South African refugees fleeing what he calls “genocide.” But the move has sparked outrage and raised questions about hypocrisy as Trump continues his tough stance on immigration, particularly toward Black and Hispanic migrants. As the media focuses on the controversial land expropriation in South Africa, many are now calling out the double standard in U.S. immigration policy.
