Wednesday, 23 August 2023 An 86-year-old man in Etna, Maine has been convicted of assuming his deceased brother's identity in 1965 and using it to fraudulently obtain Social Security benefits. The man, Napoleon Gonzalez, was caught using facial recognition technology that matched his face to two different identities. He has been convicted of charges including mail fraud, Social Security fraud, passport fraud, and identity theft. Gonzalez faces up to 20 years in prison, but his attorney plans to appeal the conviction. The investigation was launched after facial identification software detected Gonzalez's face on two state identification cards.
