Colonel-General Afzalov confirmed as chief of Russian aerospace forces
Friday, 27 October 2023 Colonel-General Viktor Afzalov has been confirmed as the new commander of Russia's aerospace forces, replacing General Sergei Surovikin. Afzalov had been acting head of the aerospace forces since Surovikin's dismissal in August. However, Kyiv has accused Afzalov of playing a direct role in planning and executing Russia's military operation against Ukraine earlier this year. Surovikin, known as "General Armageddon," briefly led Russia's campaign in Ukraine before being demoted. He disappeared from public view after a failed mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in a plane crash in August.
