Central Africa militia leader fears 'detention, torture': lawyers

IndiaTimes Friday, 27 October 2023
Former Central African Republic militia leader, Maxime Mokom, would face "detention and torture" if sent back to his troubled homeland, according to his lawyers. Mokom was released by the International Criminal Court (ICC) last week after the prosecutor dropped all charges against him. He had faced charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity over alleged atrocities committed against Muslim civilians in the CAR in 2013 and 2014. Mokom's lawyers claim he would be subjected to arbitrary and illegal detention if forcibly rendered against his will. The CAR remains troubled despite peace agreements signed in 2017 and 2019.
