China is expanding crackdown on mosques beyond Xinjiang: Report

IndiaTimes Thursday, 23 November 2023
The Chinese government has expanded its campaign of closing mosques beyond Xinjiang, according to a report by Human Rights Watch. Mosques in the Ningxia region and Gansu province have been closed and modified to look more "Chinese." The campaign is part of the government's efforts to tighten control over religion and prevent challenges to its rule. President Xi Jinping called for the "Sinicization" of religions in 2016, leading to a crackdown in Xinjiang.
