State emergency declared in Greek port city after massive dead fish crisis
Saturday, 31 August 2024 Volos in Greece is dealing with a state of emergency as large quantities of dead fish have accumulated in its port. Triggered by last year's floods, this crisis has significantly affected the local economy and tourism. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, and authorities are investigating to understand the situation better and prevent future occurrences.
Authorities in central Greece are racing to deal with an inundation of dead fish that locals say could threaten their livelihoods. It is the second recent environmental catastrophe to hit the port of Volos, a three-and-a-half-hour drive north of Athens, after floods hit the Thessaly region last year.
The freshwater fish filled both the bay and nearby rivers after they were displaced from their normal habitats by floodwater last year which was followed by months of severe drought.
