A Punjab artist painted portraits of US President-elect Joe Biden and VP-elect Kamala Harris on the eve of their inauguration. Jagjot Singh Rubal painted the portraits as a gift to the leaders on their swearing-in. The artist also expressed his wish to display his work in the White House. Rubal took 20 days to complete the portraits painted on joint canvas using acrylic colours. He had earlier received a letter of appreciation from PM Modi for his portrait. The artist from Amritsar currently holds as many as 10 world records. Biden-Harris' inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place on January 20 at the US Capitol. The event is set to be a star-studded one with celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, others.

Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the Modi government over the three farm laws that have led to massive protests by farmers. The Congress leader alleged that the Modi government was working for the benefit of a few crony capitalists that he alleged were close to the Prime Minister. He said that the three new laws will destroy agriculture in the country and it will eventually also impact the middle class as they will end up having to pay higher prices. He also said that the agriculture sector was the last that was protected from the monopoly of the corporate and that has also now been taken over. Rahul Gandhi’s attack comes as farmers have been protesting against the three laws passed by the Centre and have demanded withdrawal of the laws. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off eight trains connecting Gujarat's Statue of Unity in Kevadia with different regions of the country through video conferencing on January 17. Narendra Modi said that for the first time it is happening that several trains are flagged off for reaching one particular city. PM Modi further informed that one of the trains flagged off on January 17 will originate at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Railway Station. He further said that it is a pleasant coincidence that January 17 is also observed as birth anniversary of MGR. PM Modi said, "Probably for the first time it is happening that several trains are flagged off for one particular city. Today's event in true sense is defining both Indian Railway's vision and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's mission. During the flagging off ceremony of 8 trains connecting Gujarat's Statue of Unity in Kevadiya with different regions of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this connectivity will help in changing the lives of the tribal community of Kevadiya. PM Modi further said that the rail connectivity will bring new opportunities for job and self-employment. PM Modi said, "This connectivity will be beneficial for tourists coming to see the Statue of Unity but it will also help in changing the lives of the tribal community of Kevadiya. It will bring new opportunities for job and self-employment. This rail line will also connect religious places situated on the banks of Yamuna River. Kevadiya is no longer a small block instead it is emerging as one of the tourist destination."
During his address in the foundation stone laying ceremony of Ahmedabad and Surat metro rail projects, PM Modi said that the best example to see the work difference between previous governments and current government is the expansion of metro rail network across country. He further said that there was a time when there was no modern thinking regarding metro network and no metro policy. "Best example to see difference between approaches of previous governments' work and work of current government is the expansion of metro rail network across country. Before 2014, only 225 kms of metro line became operational in 10-12 yrs. In last 6 yrs, over 450 kms of metro network became operational. Work is underway on over 1000 kms of metro network in 27 cities across the nation, as of now. There was a time when there was no modern thinking in nation, regarding metro network. There was no metro policy. As a result, there were different kinds of metro in different cities."

Death toll mounted to 15 in Surat's hit and run case on January 19. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences on the truck accident tragedy. He also announced to give ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF (Prime Minister's National Relief Fund) to next of the kin of the deceased. And Rs 50,000 each would be given to those injured. Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 Lakhs each to the next of the kin of those who lost their lives in the accident in Surat. The labourers were sleeping on the pavement of the Palod village, when the truck driver lost his control and drove it over the sleeping workers. All the deceased hailed from Rajasthan. 13 people died on spot.
Fifteen migrant labourers from Rajasthan sleeping by the roadside died after a truck ran over them on Jan 18 in Gujarat's Surat district. The incident took place near Kosamba village, around 60 km from Surat. “The truck was on its way to Mandvi from Kim. The driver lost control of the vehicle after it hit sugarcane hanging out of the tractor trolley coming from the opposite direction,” said a police official. Twelve died on the spot while three of the eight injured died in a nearby hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that ex-gratia of Rs two lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would be given to the next of kin of each person killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 would be given to each injured. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on December 05 took a fresh jibe at Amit Shah and said that Congress MLAs were ashamed of seeing him as Union Home Minister. He also blamed BJP for allegedly trying to topple the state government. "They (BJP) tried to make the government fall in Rajasthan. After meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Steel, Dharmendra Pradhan our MLAs told me that they were ashamed to see Amit Shah as Home Minister.
