‘We need to make New York anti-poverty’ -Yang

[NFA] Former 2020 U.S. presidential contender Andrew Yang, who built a strong grassroots following on the promise of a universal basic income, is running for mayor of New York City with the same pledge.

This report produced by Emma Jehle.

“I see a crisis and I believe I can help.” Former 2020 U.S. presidential contender Andrew Yang is joining an increasingly crowded race for mayor of New York City.

Yang built an ardent grassroots following with a pledge to create a universal basic income that would pay every American $1,000 a month in his presidential campaign last year.

And he announced the same pledge for New Yorkers at a press conference Thursday.

“We need to make New York the COVID-comeback city, but also the anti-poverty city.

As mayor, we will launch the largest basic income program in the history of the country.” Yang, a native New Yorker and Ivy League-educated son of Taiwanese immigrants, stressed the need for an accessible healthcare system and a COVID recovery plan that helps working people.

He has received criticism this week after telling the New York Times that he had not remained in the city full time when it shut down this spring, saying (quote) “can you imagine trying to have two kids do virtual school in a two-bedroom apartment, and then trying to do work yourself?” More than a dozen other candidates have already declared, including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer and former Wall Street executive Raymond McGuire, whose campaign has already raised over $5 million – pushing him to the forefront of the race.

Registered Democrats will vote for their nominee in the primary election on June 22, 2021, ahead of the general election on November 2nd.

NYC’s AI Chatbot Has Been Telling Businesses to Break the Law

NYC’s AI Chatbot Has Been , Telling Businesses to Break the Law. New York City's AI chatbot was created to help small business owners, but it's been dispensing concerning advice, AP reports. . For example, many small business owners have been given inaccurate information about local policies or been encouraged to break the law. However, the city is not removing the chatbot from its official website. Instead, it has provided a disclaimer stating that the chatbot may "occasionally produce incorrect, harmful or biased" information. Critics say that the situation highlights the dangers of AI being used by governments without proper guardrails. They’re rolling out software that is unproven without oversight, Julia Stoyanovich, computer science professor and director of the Center for Responsible AI at New York University, via statement. Microsoft, which powers the chatbot, said it is working with the city "to improve the service and ensure the outputs are accurate and grounded on the city’s official documentation.". On April 2, Mayor Eric Adams said that letting users find issues with the chatbot is just part of sorting out the new technology. Anyone that knows technology knows this is how it’s done.
