Udhampur family strives hard to keep age-old bamboo craft alive

A family in Udhampur have been engaged from last 40 years in keeping the Bamboo craft alive.

Surma, along with his wife makes bamboo baskets and sells in the local markets.

Surma earns his livelihood from selling these bamboo baskets.

Surma inherited this business from his father.

Shrinking markets and cheaper substitutes for bamboo had driven traditional bamboo-weavers to poverty and deprivation but now the Government of India has taken multiple steps to keep this age-long tradition alive.

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing and highest yielding renewable natural resources making it a good substitute to wood in mitigating pressure on natural forests.
